The name on the door is almost never the licence

A mortgage broker is either appointed as a credit representative of someone who holds an Australian credit licence, or holds one themselves. In practice the first is the rule: 47,127 representatives sit under 4,347 licensees, and four licensees alone account for 17,567 of them.

That matters because the aggregator behind your local broker is not on their business card, and 1,491 licensees trade under registered business names that differ from their legal name. This site follows both links.

Where a complaint would actually go

Every credit representative must belong to an external dispute resolution scheme. Since 1 November 2018 there has been only one: AFCA, which absorbed the Financial Ombudsman Service, the Credit and Investments Ombudsman and the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal.

Yet 2,595 entries on this register still name FOS, COSL or CIO, and 3,108 name none at all. That is almost certainly a register line that was never refreshed rather than anything wrong with the broker — but a consumer who reads “FOS” and writes to FOS will find nobody there. ⚠️ What this register cannot tell you

ASIC publishes current appointments only: there is no “ceased” entry to find. So absence from this register is not proof of anything on its own — a broker who left last month simply vanishes from it, and one who holds a licence in their own right was never a representative at all.
